Alexandra Mor Debuts First Of It's Kind Sustainable Haute Couture Tagua Seeds Capsule Jewelry Collection
Alexandra Mor Presents the Tagua Seed as a Alternative Luxury Material to Elephant Ivory
NEW YORK, NY | This summer marks a major milestone for Haute joaillerie designer Alexandra Mor who will celebrate her brand’s 7th anniversary with the debut of the exotic Tagua Seeds Collection, the first collection of Haute couture jewelry to feature the Tagua seed. With this collection, Mor intends to bring attention to Tagua seeds as a luxury material, presenting them as an effective alternative for elephant ivory. Mor will present her newest body of work, during New York fashion week, at Vogue Italia's annual US Protagonist event held at Spring Studios in Tribeca, New York City on September 6th, 2017, along with 11 other selected international fine jewelry designers. 20 percent of the proceeds of Alexandra's Tagua Seed Collection will go to an elephant organization.
Upon discovering that elephant ivory is still being used for jewelry and resulting from Mor’s desire to create a more meaningful, spiritually connected, human and Eco-conscious practice, Mor was compelled to find a sustainable way to replace elephant ivory using Tagua seeds, a sustainable, botanical alternative nearly identical to elephant ivory. The new Capsule Collection incorporates traditional and handcrafted Balinese workmanship and heritage with the use of wild-harvested Tagua seeds, and heralds an evolution of Mor’s signature design aesthetic through its unique and unexpected combination of new materials discovered on her 2017 artistic journey in Bali, Indonesia. Artisanal, hand-carved Tagua seeds, black and red Balinese wood, Sumatran pearls and 22 karat yellow gold work, reveal their luxury alongside unmistakable signature details of rare and beautiful gemstones and Diamond melee; that distinguish the limited-edition and one-of-a-kind pieces of the Alexandra Mor brand. In just one year, a single Tagua Palm can produce as much ivory as an average African elephant can in its lifetime and can offer a real solution to help stop the senseless killing of beautiful and soulful animals. Through this capsule collection, Mor will bring awareness to the tragic reality of species on the brink of extinction, the preservation of native forests and the people and culture that depend on their survival.
Said Alexandra Mor, “There is so much about my Balinese experience that connects with my spiritual and personal story as a woman and a designer; so it was only natural to make my new collection entirely crafted and designed in Bali with my local team. I’m honored to be able to share this creative journey and collaborate with both local craftsman in Bali and other fine jewelry designers on the annual Vogue US Protagonist event, to inspire and bring more awareness and empower my collectors, retailers and colleagues alike with extraordinary, and more meaningful jewelry.”
The Tagua Seeds Collection centers around the natural, wild-grown and sustainably harvested Ecuadorian Tagua seeds that Mor discovered during her time living on the island of Bali. Included in the collection are earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, cuffs and a clutch inspired by traditional Balinese design motifs like the Tree of Life, or Kayonan, Mala, and the Kalabubu, the Nias headhunters warrior necklace. Alessandro Cremona, Vogue Italia Advertising Director at Conde Nast International stated, "Alexandra has been an integral part of Vogue Italia's annual U.S Protagonists event since the beginning. She is responsible for the concept of this year's Tagua Seeds event, an event so closely aligned with Vogue Italia's commitment to leading Haute joaillerie and luxury industry in a sustainable, socially responsible direction. She is a
leader who sees the bigger picture and who recognizes that natural, sustainable and socially conscious materials are the future of fashion."
